What the Gospel "IS" and What the Gospel is "NOT"

Having had the opportunity to study this subject through the writings of many Christian scholars over a period of 20 years, I am more than qualified to tell you what the Gospel is and what the Gospel is not.

The Gospel is not about us (Christians). We are simply the benefactors of the Gospel. The Gospel is not Matthew, Mark, Luke and John as some Catholics would have you believe. The Gospel is a past historical event. It took place over 2000 years ago before we were ever born. There is nothing that we can experience that can be called the Gospel.

The Gospel calls all religions and all religious thought into question.

It is because of this that the Gospel causes controversy and descension. We must always remember that all of the apostles except for John died violent deaths because of their faith in Christ and his Gospel.

Paul received the Gospel directly from Jesus Christ, Galatians 1:11, 12. The Gospel that Paul received from Christ was the same Gospel that Peter preached on the day of Pentecost, Acts 2:14, but was with much greater detail. Paul taught the Gospel that he had received from Christ to the other apostles. Some of the apostles along with many others, could not believe that the law of Moses had been abolished and that now... "The just shall live by faith" Romans 1:17, and not according to the law and the Jewish religion.

The Gospel is that work that Jesus Christ did in our name and on our behalf that justifies the ungodly, Romans 4:5 and reconciles the whole world unto God, 2 Corinthians 5:19. Who is Jesus Christ? Jesus is the second person of the Godhead and the eternal Son of God. He was in heaven with God before the creation of the world, Colossians 1:14-19.

It was God's plan that his Son Jesus Christ was to come into the human race through the virgin Mary. Jesus Christ was God's new Adam and our new representative. His purpose was to save and to perfect our humanity and to take it back to heaven. This he has done and he did it perfectly, Hebrews 1:3.

"And having spoiled principalities and powers, he made a show of them openly, triumphing over them in it" Colossians 2:5.

The Gospel is a declartion from God that his Son Jesus Christ has victoriously defeated sin, death and the devil and in doing so has made it possible for all who do nothing more than calling upon the name of the Lord to be saved, Romans 10:13. If Jesus had not defeated sin, death and the devil no one could be saved.

God now sees ALL THINGS in his Son Jesus Christ, Colossians 1:20. As far as God is concerned Jesus has reconciled us and the whole world unto God, 2 Corinthians 5:18, 19. We are "In Christ" and Christ is in heaven, Colossians 3:3. Its over, Its finished. We have been MADE complete in Christ, Colossians 2:10. We do not become complete in Christ. We are MADE complete in Christ.

What does this mean? It means that the Gospel and faith in Christ is the entrance into eternal life, plus nothing. Jesus said, "I am the way, the truth and the life: no man comes to the Father but by me" John 14:6.

Religion, whether it be Calvinism, Catholicism or any other religon is a diversion away from the truth and the glorious Gospel of Jesus Christ and does NOT lead to eternal life.

Paul taught the Gospel that he had received from Christ to the other apostles.

Barnabas and Paul preached the gospel of the kingdom of God.

And when they had preached the gospel to that city and made many disciples, they returned to Lystra, Iconium, and Antioch, strengthening the souls of the disciples, exhorting them to continue in the faith and saying, “We must through many tribulations enter the kingdom of God.” (Acts 14:21-22 NKJV)

The Kingdom Gospel is a broad term for anything that has to do with Jesus.

The Gospel that Paul received from Christ is the Gospel that justifies the ungodly Romans 4:5 and reconciles the world unto God, 2 Corinthians 5:19. It has to do with the saving work of Christ.

WHAT THE GOSPEL IS NOT

The Gospel is not that you have been born again.

The Gospel is not that you have been predestinated.

The Gospel is not that you said the sinners prayer.

The Gospel is not that you have joined the Catholic church.

The Gospel is not that you have invited Jesus into your heart.

The Gospel is not that you take the sacraments.

The Gospel is not that you keep the commandments.

The Gospel is not that you believe that Jesus is the Christ.

The Gospel is not that you are a good person.

The Gospel is not anything that you say or do.

Not unless he reconciled himself to God by faith in Christ. If he did end up doing that then yes he is saved because the cross is more powerful than hitler's sin

Based on repentance and belief. Jesus said, “The time is fulfilled and the kingdom of God is at hand. Repent and believe in the gospel.”
(Mark 1:15 NKJV)

I said the same thing about Acts 2, that Paul got the full scoop a little later than Peter's sermon in Acts 2. Good post/thread

The original gospel that Jesus preached to the Jews is what they would be preaching from Jerusalem today if the had not rejected their calling, the gospel and killed Jesus. Jesus didn't come to die for the cause of sin, he came to live for the cause of salvation as well as achieve unquestioned Lordship of his creation. He did both.

The original gospel was to be preached to all the world. But after the ascension the gospel changed, it was no longer about salvation by faith in our Father in contrast to institutional religion, racial faith inherited, rituals, sacrifices or man made laws, the new gospel was influenced by Peters impulsive, post ascension speculation. Then Paul brought his Pagan baggage from Tarsus.

Paggan baggage from Tarsus?

What are you another Paul hater? Paul received the Gospel that justifies the ungodly, Romans 4:5 and reconciles the world unto God, 2 Corinthians 5:18, 19, directly from Jesus Christ, Galatians 1:11, 12.

My doctrine is true because it is based upon the Bible, the Gospel and justification by faith, and is confirmed by the Holy Spirit.

What you need to do is get all of your man conceived writings together and throw them in the trash.

It's seems a bit contradictory.

So reading what other people write isn't a bad thing. That was your point earlier.

A lot depends upon what they are writing.

Most of the scholars writing was in defense of the Gospel and justification by faith.

Not all had the truth. You have to compare it with what scripture says.

I can do that with things like the Canons of Dort and the London Baptist Confession of Faith. So I'm all good.

What the Gospel "IS" and What the Gospel is "NOT"

What the Gospel "IS" and What the Gospel is "NOT"

Then you are as blind as a bat.

There is NOTHING about Christ and his Gospel in any of that.

Sure there is.

Every section has scripture references.

For instance:

Those whom God effectually calleth, he also freely justifieth, not by infusing righteousness into them, but by pardoning their sins, and by accounting and accepting their persons as righteous; not for anything wrought in them, or done by them, but for Christ's sake alone; not by imputing faith itself, the act of believing, or any other evangelical obedience to them, as their righteousness; but by imputing Christ's active obedience unto the whole law, and passive obedience in his death for their whole and sole righteousness by faith, which faith they have not of themselves; it is the gift of God.
