US Women Win World Cup

The US team shocked Japan with four early goals and cruised to a 5-2 victory in the World Cup Final. Carli Lloyd got a first half hat trick.

I was in the neighborhood Italian restaurant, with a bunch of old European and Mexican guys at the bar, and the booths were full of dads with their little girls in soccer shirts.

A good time was had by all, I think.

I felt bad for Japan when the US jumped out to such a big lead. Lloyd was crazy in that first half.

I thought they seemed certain to win as soon as everyone began snarking about how they aren't really that good and hating on them for all their drama.

Drama, though? Compared to what comes from most European men's teams? Puh-leeeeeeeeaze...

I was most pleased that the team got behind Hope Solo, and really helped her get her personal life together, after she looked about to self-destruct.

If this team is one thing, it's together. Give Sundhage a lot of credit for that. She clearly outcoached her opposition thoughout the tournament. Not to take anything from the players, who are the world's best. But they have a coach worthy of their skill.
