It has occurred to me that the Adam and Eve story in the garden of Eden is a moral tale about the dangers of the pursuit of knowledge.
This is contrary to the current modern belief that our technology and science is IMPROVING our lives. While it is very clear that our bodies have benefited from the comforts and abundance of the new won knowledge of the scientific world. It appear very much the opposite when it come to our emotional and spiritual well being.
I am wondering if we as children of god have lost our way playing with the pretty toys and ignoring the work that needs to be done. It is very difficult to convey to a society that has been 'educated' that there is certain intrinsic knowledge of the soul that is lost by our children as they grow up. Especially when we have been told all our lives and we ourselves are telling our children to leave the naivete of childhood behind.
If the knowledge of your soul is lost then you cannot find God for God is linked to your soul (as in the 'holy spirit').
So when you are 'nitpicking' over the meaning or understanding of the words as written, have you lost your soul to the 'Devil in the detail'?
