The book of Acts is one of the most interesting books in the New Testament. It is called Acts because it is the acts of the apostles. Luke wrote the book of Acts. Many churches try to model their church after the book of Acts, which is not a good idea. Acts is a one time event, It will never happen again, nor should we try to make it happen again.
Acts is about the Gospel coming into the world in the power of the Holy Spirit. It is not about the Holy Spirit, it is about the Gospel. The Holy Spirit was the vehicle that God used to bring the Gospel into the world. It is not about the messenger, it is about the message. Pentecostals seem to think that the main thing in the book of Acts is the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit does not speak of himself, John 16:13. His purpose is to magnify the work and person of Jesus Christ.
The Gospel came into the world in the power of the Holy Spirit. The apostles were all together in one place and suddenly there came a sound from heaven like a mighty wind and there appeared cloven tongues like fire that sat upon each one of them and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in foreign languages, Acts 2:1-4. What were they speaking about? They were speaking about the "Wonderful works of God" Acts 2:11, which is the Gospel. There were people there from all over that part of the world and they all heard the Gospel in their own language, Acts 2:8.
What was the purpose of all of this? God was sending the message of the Gospel into the world for the very first time in the power of the Holy Spirit. What was the results of this event? All that heard and believed the Gospel that was preached by Peter, Acts 2:14, received the Holy Spirit and were born again. The total number of Jews that heard and believed the Gospel was about 8,000, Acts 2:41 also Acts 4:4. Nothing in Jerusalem was the same after this. God had given birth to the New Testament church through the preaching of the Gospel.
This confirmed what Paul said in Romans 10:17. "So then faith comes by hearing and hearing by the word of God" Which is the Gospel. Some of those who heard the Gospel and believed the Gospel had participated in the crucifixion of Christ, Acts 2:36, yet they were converted to Christ. The Gospel truly is the "Power of God unto salvation" Romans 1:16. After Pentecost the apostles went everywhere preaching the Gospel. Nothing more was said about their upper room experience, with the sound of the mighty wind, the tongues or the cloven tongues of fire. They had a much greater message than that, they had the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
