There is a daily radio program called either A WORD WITH YOU or AMAZING FACTS which has a great understanding of the date-setting problem of eschatology. One source of the program is KROH Port Townsend WA 91.1 FM, M-F about 430 (the print schedule shows both programs at that time).
Recently, the summary went like this. Popular eschatology has usually mistaken the modern Israel as the 'Jerusalem above'. It expects there to be a set of events in modern Israel and that the Bible predicts these events exactly. But the NT does not. Instead there is the end of this world and a new kind of Jerusalem very different from the usual dimensions and materials of earth. It is that which Paul refers to in Gal 4 or Peter in 2 Pet 3 or the Rev in 20, 21. A basic understanding of what the NT is saying about the new Jerusalem in itself should stop the date-setting or the 'daily prophecy watch' of events in modern Israel.
