Rush Limbaugh's theory on the Measles outbreak

Rush Limbaugh is known for voicing controversial opinions on his syndicated radio show. However, his latest statement about the recent measles outbreak has liberals completely outraged, but it may be because he has hit the nail on the head this time.
Most media outlets are blaming the measles outbreak on Americans who chose not to vaccinate their children. Some liberals in the media have even suggested that conservatives are less likely to vaccinate their children, even though there is no evidence to suggest that.

Is Rush right? I think so. In the link is a video where experts discuss the outbreak.

One of the diseases mentioned in the video being brought in by these illegal immigrants is an antibiotic resistant tuberculosis.

looks like we need to start vaccinating all those countries that send us immigrants, legal or otherwise :idunno:

It's a very ugly bit of confirmation bias, not to mention just about the oldest bit of populist scare-mongering in the book. He always knew he hated those dern illegals, and now he has one more reason. But, of course, it's a complete fantasy.

Even if the outbreak were triggered by an undocumented immigrant, it would still only have been able to spread in an area with a high un-vaccinated population. Like Orange County, CA, for instance.

Illegal immigrants are bringing all kinds of diseases into the US, diseases that the US had eradicated decades ago.

Su-u-u-ure...and the first place they go when they get here is Disneyland. Otherwise patient zero would have shown up elsewhere. Considering that the incubation period is 7-14 days, someone must have rushed here and then made Splash Mountain a priority.

For anyone wondering what aCW looks like, I found a picture.

Rush is not saying anything the native Americans didn't say about white invaders. :)

Untrue. Few if any vaccines have ever been 100% effective across a given population. The bigger the population, the more individual recipients in which a vaccine will appear not to work, mainly due to strains the shot can't account for. So if you introduce previously 'alien' strains, this is exactly what happens even in a fully vaccinated population.

I suspect you already know that but Limbaugh makes you all grrr.

Gay Days at Disneyland won't be for another couple of months Morphie, so try to focus.

Are you saying that your Marxist President's open border policy is a good thing and that diseases from 3rd world countries can't affect American citizens?

The story said liberals are furious, UT didn't site any examples of that. What liberals got really upset by his comment? Name some names.

I have a feeling the "liberals completely outraged" part is just an attention grabber to get conservatives to click the headline.

You should post that pic about yourself, because of course its just totally impossible that an undocumented person here illegally, could have infected anyone who went to Disney that day well before they had symptoms and chose to go there.

People with measles are contagious (can spread the disease) from 5 days before the rash appears until about 4 days after that, and are most contagious while they have a fever, runny nose, and cough.

ACW is most likely correct in his assessment because measles was once eradicated here in the US according to the CDC itself.

Meaning, genius, that someone had to have brought it here from another country.

Indian tribes were attacking, enslaving, raping, sometimes eating and eradicating each other before Whitey ever got on a boat.

That has nothing to do with disease. How does any of that relate to a comparison to the op about disease from outsiders?

Try to focus, Spicoli.

You are the one switching the conversation from disease to rape, slavery and cannibalism.

You switched first, when did the indians offer vaccinations against measles outbreaks?

I won't deny that "old world diseases" were brought to early America by European settlers, but keep in mind Doper that those same diseases had killed many Europeans as well.

Smallpox was a leading cause of death in the 18th century. It killed an estimated 400,000 Europeans each year in the 18th century, including five reigning European monarchs. Most people became infected during their lifetimes, and about 30% of people infected with smallpox died from the disease.

The Franco-Prussian War triggered a smallpox pandemic of 1870–1875 that claimed 500,000 lives.

As A4T pointed out (in so many words), it wasn't the American savages that found a vaccination for a disease that killed millions, it was a English doctor.

This article talks about more the smallpox outbreak.

Smallpox in the New World:

Some of the African slaves brought by Columbus to be used on the sugar plantation of the West Indies carried the smallpox virus. In 1495, fifty-seven to eighty percent of the native population of Santa Domingo, and in 1515, two-thirds of the Indians of Puerto Rico were wiped out by smallpox. Ten years after Cortez arrived in Mexico, the native population dropped from twenty-five million to six million five hundred thousand a reduction of seventy-four percent.

Prior to the arrival of Europeans, various sources estimate native population in North and South America at ninety to one hundred million. It is impossible to arrive at the number of Indians in the Americas killed by European diseases with smallpox the deadliest by far. Even the most conservative estimates place the deaths from smallpox above sixty-five percent (Bray).

Stearn and Stearn estimated there were approximately one million Indians living north of the Rio Grande in the early sixteenth-century. By the end of the sixteen hundreds, smallpox had spread up and down the eastern seaboard and as far west as the Great Lakes. Bray estimated by 1907 there were less than four hundred thousand Indians north of the Rio Grande. This precipitous decline was not due to smallpox alone. Other diseases played a role, as did intertribal warfare and conflicts with the United States army.

The first major outbreak of an infectious disease on the eastern coast of North America was between 1616-19. The Massachusetts and other Algonquin tribes in the area were reduced from an estimated thirty thousand to three hundred(Bray). When the Pilgrims landed in 1620, there were few Indians left to greet them. Many observers believe this infectious disease was smallpox. Researchers believe smallpox reached the Atlantic Coast of what was to become the United States either from Canada or the West Indies.

It was inevitable European diseases would run rampant through the indigenous populations of the Americas. The native populations of North and South America had no immunities, or genetic tolerance, to any of the European diseases, and not all white Americans had immunities to them either. The estimate is about twenty-five percent of the emigrants lacked immunity to the smallpox virus.
