All false religion and false worship is the result of the general revelation that Paul speaks of in Romans. Mankind receives and acknowledges that the Creator exists and then ‘’choses’’ to worship. Depending on where they are born and what the common form of religion/denomination happens to be.

Only those that are called to worship in spirit and in truth by the Father can do so. This was true of Cain and Abel and it is true today.

Romans 1:19,20 KJV
Because that which may be known of Elohim is manifest in them; for Elohim hath manifested it unto them.
For His invisibles from the creation of the cosmos are clearly seen, being comprehended by His doings, both His eternal dynamis and Divinity; so that they are inexcusable:

Everyone has a God given "conscience" (Romans 2:14). Therefore, the "wrath of God" (Romans 1:18) is justly put upon them that are ungodly and unrighteous (v. 18).

Apart from Yisra'El and some proselytes the entire population of the planet was left without the revelation necessary to worship.

''Who are Israelites; to whom pertaineth the adoption, and the glory, and the covenants, and the giving of the law, and the service of God, and the promises;'' Romans 9:4 KJV

That's why Nicodemus was confused when Messiah said, Elohim so loved the world, because up until then Elohim had only ever loved and shown His love to the Hebrews.
