Private Threads - To Be Or Not To Be?

Ok, y'all know what I mean, they are those threads meant for a select few.

Only you may not know that until you accidentally post on them - and then - in much the same as finding you have just stepped in a fresh cow patty while walking through the back pasture, you realize you are standing in sh*t.

People may tell you cowboys and cowgirls have pointy
toed boots to goad their horses along if need be. But if the dung is dry enough those pointy toed boots are perfect for pooh kicking.
But I digress.

What about these threads, Ladies and Gentleman, Rednecks and Geeks,
Hamsters and Wheels?
Do we tip toe around not posting on what may look like ordinary threads because we have found they may not be ordinary?

They may be Special?

In fact they may be so very special, and run by the tender, the sensitive, the select and the determined to stay so - that you may get castigated, negative repped, or even suffer PTSD after it is all over - partly because of the shock coming from thinking you knew this place, the rules, the people - when really you now find you did not.

Take the Cigar Smokers Thread though as your first example, please.

You may not see it very often but it will come up ever so often - and guess what? Cigar Smokers will oft post on it.

I don't smoke but I will post on it too, because, well that is another story.

But do you say away from it because it may seem special?

Guess what they do about my posting on it?

Do they cry? Point their unforgiving possibly stained finger at me?
Hurt my heart?
No. They give as they take and I leave them then alone.

Now TH has asked me to stay off the HOFer's thread. I think Jimmy Hoffa would be proud of him for being so bossy.

But should I stay off?
Should you?

Please share your opinions, thank you.

I'm ok with it. There are plenty of other threads to check out and post on. It doesn't bother me.

As I read back over this, I realize I didn't answer your question. No, I don't think we should post in the HOF thread if we aren't HOF members. There are plenty of other threads that can be graced by our presence. :D

Wow, I appreciate y'all's speedy responses!

And you bring up an excellent point. Hoffers are not supposed to be Unremarkable.

So their thread would be extraordinary too, wouldn't it?
And of course, for their conversations to really shine amongst themselves and not be self conscious they need to be all to themselves, right?

I mean not like a club or anything because no doubt they should be somewhat the exhibitionists, yes?

So I guess we should just read their thread while not posting on it and see with
adoration just how deserving they are to be on a special thread?

They will be brilliant?

Yes.

Whether it's the HOF thread or a Christmas music thread that had a plan or any other thread that seems to have a particular reason for being that's different from other TOL threads and may not require or ask for the input of everyone.

I guess I've just not put that much thought into it. I don't see it as an issue. :idunno:

I have never posted in "The Cigar Smoker's" thread because, whilst I love the smell of a good cigar, I am not a smoker!
Any "Hall of Fame" thread is not of interest to me because, whilst there are many fine posters included there, I am not one of them.
There is much here to keep me busy.

Yes I understand believe me, that is how I felt before I got insulted, corrected and ordered about.

But now my innocence is gone.

You are a good example - how many people may be unsuspecting of proverbial hidden land mines in certain threads here if they post on them?

Perhaps rather than a club - they could be put in the theology club section where one signs up to post and no one is going to accidentally wander in onto a thread where they do not belong and thus be publicly punished?

Why is this so important to you?

I could say all of us are rather boring except how we interplay with and off each other so - all threads theoretically should improve with more of us all posting. Now that is in theory, in reality that is not always so as we have seen and experienced - but still a variety of people posting should be better than some homogeneous clique. Could keep us all grounded.

Almost everyone is remarkable in one way or another!
I nominate you to "The Hall of Possibly Remarkable Person"!
I also nominate Rainee!
Ahh Bybee! But I agree with you - everyone here at TOL is remarkable.
Even the scary ones

But I am not saying anything is wrong within the Hall of Fame!!
I'm saying they can't have a thread unless something is especially done to show they need to be separate from main population, like it has been done in prisons for child molesters...
