The New York State attorney general’s office filed a scathingly worded lawsuit on Thursday taking aim at the Donald J. Trump Foundation, accusing the charity and the Trump family of sweeping violations of campaign finance laws, self-dealing and illegal coordination with the presidential campaign.

The lawsuit, which seeks to dissolve the foundation and bar President Trump and three of his children from serving on nonprofit organizations, was an extraordinary rebuke of a sitting president. The attorney general also sent referral letters to the Internal Revenue Service and the Federal Election Commission for possible further action, adding to Mr. Trump’s extensive legal challenges.

The lawsuit, filed in State Supreme Court in Manhattan, culminated a nearly two-year investigation of Mr. Trump’s charity, which became a subject of scrutiny during and after the 2016 presidential campaign. While such foundations are supposed to be devoted to charitable activities, the complaint asserts that Mr. Trump’s was often used to settle legal claims against his various businesses, even spending $10,000 on a portrait of Mr. Trump that was hung at one of his golf clubs.

The foundation was also used to curry political favor, the lawsuit asserts. During the 2016 race, the foundation became a virtual arm of Mr. Trump’s campaign, email traffic showed, with his campaign manager Corey Lewandowski directing its expenditures, even though such foundations are explicitly prohibited from political activities.

Mr. Trump immediately attacked the lawsuit, characterizing it in a Twitter post as an attempt by the “sleazy New York Democrats” to damage him by suing the foundation, vowing not to settle the case.

Sometimes, for celebrities, it seems that once they're wounded, every dirty thing they ever did rises up to get them.

This could amount to criminal behavior, but odds are, it won't result in anything more than fines and bans from serving on charitable organizations. But it's one more headache for Trump at a time when he doesn't need more troubles.

In one significant incident, Trump raised money for the foundation during a January 2016 televised veterans’ fundraiser he held instead of participating in a primary debate. Lewandowski dictated how and when five $100,000 grants would be dispersed to Iowa veterans’ non-profits just days before the Feb. 1, 2016 Iowa caucuses, an alleged violation of state and federal law.

Brad Parscale, the campaign’s digital director, created a website for the fundraiser, while communications director Hope Hicks helped arrange speakers for the event.
As the lawsuit notes, Trump, under penalty of perjury, repeatedly signed IRS 990 forms affirming that the tax-exempt foundation did not carry out political activity. Yet he repeatedly violated these rules, the lawsuit alleges.

In 2013, the foundation donated $25,000 to a political group working to reelect Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi. The foundation’s annual IRS report listed a donation to a Kansas nonprofit with a similar name, and only admitted to improperly giving money to the Bondi group after the Washington Post’s David Fahrenthold reported on the transaction. . . .

This alleged improper payment, detailed in the suit, is one of many abuses first surfaced during the 2016 presidential election thanks to Fahrenthold’s tenacious reporting.

These include Trump’s use of the charity’s money to settle legal disputes involving his for-profit businesses. In 2007, Trump used $100,000 of the charity’s money to settle a dispute with the town of Palm Beach over code violations at his Mar-a-Lago club. Five years later, the foundation doled out $158,000 to settle a lawsuit with a man angry that he did not receive a $1 million hole-in-one prize during a tournament at another golf club.

The guy actually expected Trump to pay his debts? And Trump used other people's money given for charity to get out of his legal problems?

This stuff isn't even news these days.

That's how he wants it. Keep us so bombarded we can't keep up with it all and everything gets normalized or collapsed. Nothing but a bloated human DoS attack on this country.

True ... though a rational human being would be concerned about history ... which will not speak favorably of him. Also, one day (hopefully soon, for the sake of the country), he will not be in office. At this point, he will no longer be able to obstruct justice or have any power to control the media. The volume of his microphone on the world stage will be permanently diminished.:cloud9:

This one could be a big deal, in that the state can indeed compel Trump to testify. And his lawyers know that he is inherently unable to tell the truth for any significant length of time.

Given that perjury is an offense for which a president can be impeached and convicted, I expect they will do anything and everything to keep him from going under oath.

It seems unlikely that Trump's lawyers will permit him to contest the suit. Most likely, like his fraud trial, he'll settle, costing him millions more and further restricting his behavior.

The alternative would be to testify, and expose himself to perjury charges.
