Maybe this is what 'reformed Islam' could look like

It seems like many of these Islamic extremists like drugs, gay sex, video games, fast food and American movies. If they can purge their murderous tendencies they could fit right in with millions of folks here.

In all seriousness, and fairness, Christianity's got, what--an eight or nine century lead on Islam. Now Christendom had to be dragged into some form of enlightenment, but the point is, it went. Its worst impulses and abuses were stifled (and hopefully will remain) and its power seriously checked.

In a nuclear age I don't know if we have the luxury of giving Islam another eight hundred years to grow up, catch up, and get with the program.

Granite's reign is never really threatened. A winning combination of magical thinking, shallow intellect, juvenile emotionalism and a millenial's proud, unshakable belief that his special snowflake self can't be wrong. He's the moron's moron.

It's a simple matter of history. Christianity did eventually change, but needed considerable time. Given the current environment and ability to damage ourselves, Islam put the rest of civilization in a bind: It literally doesn't have the necessary time to change as quickly as it should, or even can. So I don't know where that leaves us.

If you want to have a discussion go ahead but if you want to act the fool keep your shtick up.

About the only reason for optimism is that we've seen dramatic, rapid shifts in the late 20th and early 21st centuries that might--might--bode well for significant change in the Muslim world. What should worry everyone (and certainly causes me concern) is the apparent lack of interest on the part of so many Muslims to acknowledge how at odds with 21st century civ its beliefs truly are. Show me a willingness to adapt, change and reform. Where exactly is any of that happening in the Muslim world? So far I don't see it.

Don't you see this is proof that these extremists aren't truly devout Muslims? They don't obey the Quran when it tells them to not get high. They don't obey when it says to wait until marriage for sex. They don't obey by eating the right food.

If they don't do any of that as the Quran says, why do you think that their violence would be any different? These people take Surahs out of context and use them to justify this wicked lifestyle they've adopted. They are Muslims, just really really bad ones, and far from representative of what a devout Muslim should be according to the Quran

Yeah, that's the thing: So many of these extremists seem to be pretty lousy Muslims. Zealots usually aren't terribly good at orthodoxy, if you think about it.
