In our (Jewish) tradition, it's clear that Judah was wrong in the story. What Judah actually says at the end is that Tamar was "more righteous than me", which is quite a turn-around for him. She was the ancestor of King David- see book of Ruth- which is why she appears in Jesus's genealogy. This guy is pretty good, paying attention to pronunciation and at least trying to think how people thought back then, and what ancient customs were like. Curious that he skips over why Onan died.
