How can anyone be saved by fire?

1Co 3:13 Every man's work shall be made manifest: for the day shall declare it, because it shall be revealed by fire; and the fire shall try every man's work of what sort it is.
1Co 3:14 If any man's work abide which he hath built thereupon, he shall receive a reward.
1Co 3:15 If any man's work shall be burned, he shall suffer loss: but he himself shall be saved; yet so as by fire.

It doesn't say by fire; it says so as by fire.

The picture is that of someone wakened at night in a burning home and they escape just in time to save their lives. They take nothing out with them but the clothes they wore to bed. All their valuables, all their mementoes and such are destroyed. But at least they are okay.

1Cor 3:10-15 isn't talking about John Q and Jane Doe rank and file pew warmers. It's talking about people active in a Christian ministry; e.g. pastors, deacons, Sunday school teachers, evangelists, missionaries, et al.

What Paul is saying is that the quality of some people's work is so substandard that they will get no recognition for it. However, though their works will be burned up, they themselves will not be harmed.

Some people believe that 1Cor 3:10-15 teaches the existence of a purgatory, but the tenor of the passage is so obviously about Christian ministries that there is no excuse for that mistake.

The wording is suffer loss. and the day will declare it.
