This one example clarifies so many "givens" about how the apostles quoted the OT:
A great example of NT using OT. Lk 22 quoting Is 56 re the house of prayer. This passage is quoted and used because the house of prayer was the one that came to be after the exile and during the NT. So when Jesus complains that it had become a den of terrorists, it is on top of the fact that everyone in Judaism thought it had been that house of prayer, not something in the distant future.
In addition, the Sovereign Lord who gathers the exiles (which he had done) says he will gather still others to those already gathered. That is the nations who will believe the Gosple. We already know he is speaking of the NT period because he already referred to the house of prayer as being in place by then.
And btw it is the house of prayer for all nations not just Israel. This finds its true fulfillment in Christ.
