Opinion: The American right is becoming completely untethered from reality

Max Boot

When it comes to “information warfare,” illiberal regimes such as Russia have a major advantage over liberal democracies such as the United States. U.S. government agencies such as the State Department’s Global Engagement Center put the best possible spin on U.S. actions but aren’t allowed to simply lie.

By contrast, Russia’s troll farm (formerly known as the Internet Research Agency), its foreign intelligence agency, the SVR, and other organs of the Kremlin are free to spin fantasies out of thin air: Malaysian airliner MH17, shot down by pro-Russian rebels over Ukraine, was actually a victim of the CIA. A democratic revolution in Ukraine was actually a fascist uprising. Western covid-19 vaccines, which have proven highly safe and effective, are actually dangerous.

The Kremlin strategy is not so much to make people believe its individual lies as to make them doubt the very possibility of truth. As the old saying goes: In a world where nothing is true, everything is permitted. . . .

The Republican Party is increasingly catering to people who live in an alternative universe of false narratives spread by media outlets such as Fox News and Newsmax and on social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter and Google/YouTube. A major political movement becoming completely untethered from reality is terrifying to see — and often accompanies the slide into authoritarianism.

Yes, this is an opinion piece, and yes, as historian and foreign policy analyst and adviser, he's more qualified to say it than anyone here who doesn't like it or him. He also wrote in 2018 The Corrosion of Conservatism: Why I Left the Right.

The GQP is galloping towards fascism, authoritarianism, and white nationalism. It's filled with conspiracy-theory Kool-Aid drinkers who've become, as Boot says, completely untethered from reality, in a perpetual state of rage and victimhood and fear.

I saw a segment on Tucker Carlson's bit on Fox News a month or so ago where he was on about how they bring the latest on stuff including UFO sightings and it was equal parts hilarious and sad...fits right into the conspiracy mindset however.

This is hilarious. The article is describing the actions of the left and attributing them to conservatives. You're out of your ever loving mind, It's the left that has completely abandoned reality. There are, and always have been, only two genders. Male and female were created by God. There are no other genders.

Oh, and you're showing your love of totalitarianism. Make wild claims and then try to shut down the voices pointing out to you that you're loony tunes. That you think no one understands all of this says how far down the pathway of insanity you've gone.

This type of rebellion against God can end only in death for He will stand up and hold you to account for your wickedness. And you will be unable to stop Him. You guys rebelling against God is much like the ant telling the elephant that he's going to beat the elephant to death in a straight up one on one fight. Only humans against God is even more of a one-sided affair than the ant and the elephant.

The left has it's problems too. They've gone way overboard with political correctness and censorship. I think the extreme left helped trigger the extreme right's current insanity, including much of the Trump phenomenon.

I'm hoping that the Republicans wake up and choose a solid, intelligent, candidate for the next presidential elections. Like Nikki Haley.

Liz Cheney is the only woman in the GOP who said “no” to the kool-aid and is thereby worthy of consideration, IMO. As for the Dems, we need more moderates as well as outing of a few. Namely Joe Manchin and Kysten Sinema.

Of course the left has its problems too, but I'm not gonna do the both-sidesism here, chair. It wasn't Democrats who ransacked the Capitol, or denied the legality of the 2020 election, or pushed the QAnon conspiracy, or called Covid a hoax. It could also be said that the extreme right has woken up the extreme left, and people who aren't on one extreme or the other have to make a choice every four years because our two-party system leaves no useful alternative. A battle to watch is within the GOP, between Reagan conservatives and Trump conservatives. Liz Cheney and Adam Kinzinger on one side, Marjorie Taylor Greene and Lauren Boebert on the other.

Why do we have to endure this absolute fake propaganda?

Here are the facts, which I posted long ago:

Democrats are the party of infanticide, socialism, government control, smashing Free Speech rights, giving free stuff to illegal aliens, and now they are the party of mobs in the streets burning and destroying cities. The party of JFK and Harry Truman does not even exist anymore and they would not be allowed in today's Marist Democrat party..

Republicans are the party of Traditional Values, Liberty and freedom. We have not changes a bit. The OP and the article author are blatant liars.

Those ae facts and I can verify each and every one of them. This thread needs to be moved to the coliseum. It is not a politics thread because there is not a shred of fact in it, which is a common attribute of all of anna's recent threads.

In reply to the writer of the June 8 letter “Wouk book on Nazism raises scary parallels,” I must point out that something of much greater significance has happened, something much more important than anything Donald Trump has done or not done.

For the first time in the history of the United States, the FBI and the Justice Department have been used to keep a particular political party in power. That is exactly what the Gestapo did for Germany’s Nazi Party and what the KGB did for the Soviet Union’s Communist Party. If anyone is looking for a comparison to Nazism, there it is.

I find it especially galling that the very crime President Trump is accused of (collusion with Russia) was actually committed by the Democratic Party in paying for Christopher Steele to travel to Russia and collude with Russian operatives to produce a phony dossier. Talk about hypocrisy!

I speak as an ex-Democrat (1956-2009). I left the Democratic Party, as I was disgusted by the antics of the greedy opportunistic Democrats of the Clinton and Obama years. The present Democrats are nothing compared to the good, caring Democrats of previous years, such as Harry Truman, Hubert Humphrey and Walter Mondale.

Leftward lurch: Democratic Party shift unleashes anti-Semitism

Left-leaning politicians emboldened by Trump

The Democratic Party has been moving to the left for more than a decade. And along with that leftward shift, certain ideas and attitudes that used to be considered unacceptable, and even shameful — specifically in terms of the Jewish people — have become more widely asserted.

It goes without saying that anti-Jewish sentiment has had fertile soil at colleges and universities around the country, for decades.

Then came President Barack Obama’s deal with Iran in 2015, which was a watershed moment, but not exclusively because it marked a shift in policy toward Tehran. The political fight on Capitol Hill to get Congress to approve the deal between the Obama White House and its progressive allies who wanted it, versus the more mainstream, bipartisan opposition to the deal as exemplified by American Israel Public Affairs Committee, was the first time the progressive left of the Democratic Party went up against the mainstream left on a formerly bipartisan foreign policy issue, and won.

In 2016, with the election of President Donald Trump this leftward shift has accelerated, bringing with it a shift in attitude toward Jew

I'm a bit surprised that the site puts up with this constant flood of posts from Lady Trump Girl. But she's on the Right Side, so I guess it makes sense. Now I'm wondering when I'll put her on ignore.

My guess would be that they allow it because I tell the truth. I counter the socialist lies of people like you and Anna. You see, truth is something people appreciate. You cannot understand that though.
