Given the recent hack of Equifax the next step a person should take is to place a freeze on your credit data at the main credit bureaus. If you are planning some major purchases, you will have to unfreeze ("thaw") your credit freezes.

Keep a copy of the results that include a PIN to unfreeze. To thaw it, you can call a phone number (Equifax's automated freeze lift line is 1-800-685-1111) and give them the PIN along with either the date range you wanted the freeze lifted, or the name of the company you'd like to be given access to your report.
